Christmas Sweater Joy

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19, NIV).

What does a Christmas sweater have to do with Jesus? More than it might first appear.

We loved our church because they loved us so well.

During my kids’ teenage years, Coast Community Church was our spiritual home. They had some funny traditions. We grew to love each one.

The annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest came at the end of worship in December. Each participant stood on the stage as the congregation applauded. The more we loved their sweater, the louder we clapped and cheered. Whoever had the most outlandish garb won a silly prize. The laughter rewarded us all.

On birthdays, we all sang the Happy Birthday song in our very worst voice: out of tune, loud, and boisterous. The laughter filled our sanctuary with joy.

My favorite tradition was our Christmas Eve midnight service. Some came in PJs. We, the worship team, had the best view in the house. Candles shining, we all sang “Silent Night” at the stroke of midnight, welcoming in Christmas Day.

These simple traditions may not seem super holy, but they brought our community together. Loving one another need not always be a serious business. Jesus teaches us to love. He fills our hearts with joy. The Holy Spirit overflows in songs, laughter, and celebration.

That laughter and wonder Coast Community shared with us will always remain in my heart.

What joyful traditions bring laughter to your family during Christmas?
