Who’s Scared? Maybe Me!

“…like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do not give way to fear” (1 Peter 3:6, NIV).

“Your feelings are not sin. Your emotions are not your choice. You have a 90-second window before a wave of fear passes. In that time you can make a choice.”

These words from my Bible study leader awakened a new hope. I tend to react to my reaction as if I have already failed to trust God. Now I see my emotions are a sort of alarm clock. I have a choice!

When I am scared, I will bring my fear to God.

When the unexpected throws me off of my calm and cool, I will cry out to the One who is never taken by surprise.

My God will restore my courage.

He will respond to my cry.

When we feel fear, how do we respond? Do we start to play out all the worst-case scenarios? Or do we deliberately pattern our thoughts around the truth?

I can remember God’s past faithfulness in my life.

I can rehearse Bible verses to steady my thoughts.

I can pray and ask my faithful and unchanging God to come into my circumstances.

All these choices are possible even when I feel scared.

He is with me.

Fear is a training tool, drawing me close to the One who challenges me to be strong and courageous.
