Simple Beginnings

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the water” (Genesis 1:1-2).

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” (John 1:1-2).

“Do you remember? Turn back the days. In the beginning, sought simpler ways.” (Jeff Gibson, Reason)

Our beginnings don’t seem so long ago…not really. Sweet four year old Emme, afraid to learn to read incase I stopped read aloud. Bright three year old Liam, ready to jump into kindergarten along, tagging along with big sis. Rambunctious Declan, ready to undue the best laid plans of his teacher mama. Kellen still waiting to join the party, propelling a very pregnant me to start kindergarten early in case the baby had extra challenges.

I picture our little family on that very first day. I used a little ABC lesson plan, a scripture for each day. “Consider the Ants.” All our activities back then were thematic. Reading, math, social studies and Bible all centered around the Letter of the Day. Nap time came quickly back in those early beginnings. Learning felt organic, chaotic and fun.

Now they are grown, creating their own adventures. I wonder how much of their early days they remember. Will those beginning seeds I planted sprout and bloom in time?

In the beginning, God’s Spirit hovered over the water. I picture Him hovering over my little homeschool class. He brings life out of chaos. He wonderfully finishes everything He begins.

  1. Wow, you and I started with the same scriptures!
What a beautiful post! It brings back memories of my homeschooling days. I remember trying to nurse a baby while reading to my other children. It didn’t always work out well, but we had fun. Blessings to you! I’m your neighbor at #FiveMinuteFriday.
