Finding Friendship

“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need” (Hebrews 4:15,16, NASB).

“Friendship…is born at the moment when one man says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought that no one but myself…” C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

This week, my CBS bible study finished reading through the book of Job together. Every time I read this book, God shows me something new.

Job was a friend of God.

He lived a life of integrity and was blessed. When he lost it all and suffered, he was tempted to complain. He never, however, stopped seeking God. He bravely desired to approach God’s throne until YHWH revealed Job’s smallness.

Then he got quiet and listened.

How can any of us consider God as our friend? He is so much higher than us; we cannot trace His ways. Surely, God is too busy to bother with silly me over here in Navarre. I need Jesus to help me see that God sees me. He sees you, too.

Your life matters much. What you struggle with is not too small or too big for Him. Though God humbled Job, He blessed him more than before. He invites us,

 “…approach the throne…”

Jesus understands your deepest heartache. He was betrayed, misunderstood, and abused. He tolerated man’s foolish and selfish treatment so that you and I could approach.

When you are weak, He understands.

When you are lost, He calls.

When you are weary, He beckons you, “Come!”

When you are lonely, He is the friend you seek,

The one who sticks closer than a brother.
