Keeping Step

“Since we live by the Spirit, let’s keep in step with the Spirit.”

-Galatians 5:25-

Are you a planner or a pantser? Both personalities exist!

In writing, the planner wants to make everything perfect before another person reads our words. The pantser is spontaneous! They may send something out to others without much thoughtful inspection.

I am a planner. My predictable schedule, my checklist, my lesson plan bring me peace. They help me to know I am “ready” for the responsibilities at hand.

Pantsers thrive on spontaneity. Maybe they have a sense of goal, but they quickly adapt and don’t pre-plan much.

I love my schedule and my plan. God, however, likes to teach me flexibility. What if the unexpected enters my day? Can I keep my calm when the schedule breaks down? Here, the Spirit wonderfully helps to a planner like myself.

Before I teach, I thoughtfully create a plan. When I begin, I pray. If I am yielded to the Holy Spirit’s leadership, God often surprises me. We go off script! My students’ input and questions shift things. I see where God is leading. These are my favorite moments in teaching!

Before I write, I create an outline. When I begin, I pray. LORD, maybe Your plan for my words goes in a different direction. Your ways are always best! Please help this planner follow the Leader. Help me keep in step with You.

Time’s up! This post was written on a Friday when my schedule was filled with unexpected events. How’s your Friday? Are you a planner or a pantser? May you and I find our balance in the One who orders our days!

  1. That’s a new word for me (pantser).
I like having a schedule and being able to check things off a list, but there always seems to be something unexpected that pops up to disrupt the plan.
