Dedicated Rest

“For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy” (Exodus 20:11, NIV).

How is this command an invitation and a gift?

I am a purpose-driven kind of kid. Give me a checklist and some time. I happily “get things done.” Maybe that’s why I love Colossians 3:23. Doing everything, even the mundane stuff, wholeheartedly for God fits well with how I think.

The question hit me wonderfully.

God invites me to rest.

Of course, I know I should honor the Sabbath according to God’s convictions. I know I should cast my cares on the One who cares for me. Still, somehow, I never considered wholehearted rest until now.

What if I am as purposeful about resting as I am about doing my work?

How much will God renew my strength if I come to him before I am weary? What does it mean for rest to be holy?

Do I even have a clue?

I know how to be dedicated in my work. Now, Lord, please teach me dedication in rest. Help me to pause purposefully in the rhythm of each week.

I want to slow down enough to notice You more.

I want to be still and hear Your voice.

Help us learn dedication of rest.

Holy God, thank You for

 leading us well.
